La Divinia Commedia takes the stage.

Hell. It’s not somewhere any of us would want to take a vacation, but the moment we’re invited for a day out in the pit in a video game, it becomes somewhere we’re all clamoring to head off to. Stick us in a nightmare full of demons and things that we wouldn’t want to meet in our worst dreams, and we just can’t get enough. This brings me to today’s interesting bit of news. The game is La Divinia Commedia, and it got a bit of a mention over at this year’s Gamescom.

Following the debut of 2024’s evocative ‘summer soulslike’, Enotria: The Last Song, the clever folk at Jyamma Games, an Italian Dev team, are back at it again with an ambitious new project. We know it’s called La Divinia Commedia, and we know it’s destined for your PC and console screens. We also know it’s got a spangly new trailer, but that’s about it with regard to when we’ll be able to play this interesting-looking game. We also obviously know a bit about what we can expect, or this article would be a bit redundant, wouldn’t it?

At Gamescom’s Open Night Live, the developers from Milan shared a teaser trailer unveiling their new title: La Divinia Commedia. This action RPG is inspired by arguably Italy’s most celebrated poet, Dante Alighieri, and incorporates hack and slash gameplay with some dark fantasy touches. La Divinia Commedia is set in a world that reinterprets the legendary imagery of Dante’s work with Jyamma Games’ own iconic style.

In this new adventure, we are presented with an epic journey set in a world where The Divine Comedy has supplanted the old faith, bringing about an age of righteousness among humanity. When dark forces subvert the promises of the poem, order collapses, and the world is plunged into chaos. The player will take on the role of a warrior-poet trapped in the infernal depths, called to descend through the circles of Hell, facing increasingly powerful demons, and redeem a sinful past.

Mechanically, La Divinia Commedia has a lot going for it. For starters, we can expect unique gameplay mechanics for each weapon class, procedurally generated extraction dungeons, a narrative-driven alignment system tied to the Seven Deadly Sins, and the ability to forge fully customizable weapons and armor. By fully customizable, we’re talking both aesthetically and with respect to stats, so we should have a great amount of variety when it comes down to strategic options. There are also a bunch of features yet to be announced, so this is just the tip of the iceberg.

Cool mechanics are all well and good, but we also need a solid plot, and this isn’t something La Divinia Commedia appears to be lacking in either. The immersive story is enriched by references to the work of Dante himself. Players will be able to choose a male or female character and shape their experience according to their preferred style and narrative approach. All of this will be experienced in a beautiful world painted with high-fidelity graphics and animations using a cutting-edge motion capture system developed with a leading international studio already known for their work with acclaimed productions such as Phantom Blade Zero.

Like I said earlier, it’s still early days with respect to La Divinia Commedia, but if you’re interested in seeing how this title is shaping up, you can follow the progress on Jyamma Games’ Discord or over at their website. You can also take a peek at that teaser trailer if you’re feeling left out because you weren’t at Gamescom. If it makes you feel better, I wasn’t either, so I’ll be watching along with you. As always, keep your eyes peeled for more information on this fascinating project as it arrives in the future.

Open the bio of Alex Southgate

Hailing from Southport England, Alex started his gaming career in the late 80s on a Commodore 64. Since that time he's either owned or played on virtually every console released. Alex happens to be one of that rare breed of gamers just as happy and comfortable in front of a PC screen as a PS4 and has a massively diverse and eclectic love of genres.

We also think something may have snapped somewhere along the line as topping his favourite things to do in a game is getting killed. Rogue likes and games that make death not only a really good thing to do but mandatory are at the top of his love list.

When not glued to a screen as a gamer Alex is glued to the screen as a DJ, so picking the right gaming playlist is almost as important to him as actually playing the game. Evidently getting murdered to the right soundtrack is what all the kids are doing these days.
